Al-Shabab extremists kill at least 20 travelers in Somalia

Somali state media and residents say the extremist group al-Shabab killed a minimum of 20 individuals and burned seven autos transporting meals within the Hiran area Saturday morning.

Residents mentioned the assault was in retaliation for a neighborhood mobilization in opposition to the al Qaeda-affiliated group.

“The victims had been drivers and passengers transporting meals provides from Beletweyne to Mahas, and a complete of seven vehicles carrying meals and autos utilized by the passengers had been set ablaze,” resident Hassan Abdulle advised The Related Press by telephone.

The assault got here a day after authorities forces destroyed land mines that al-Shabab had planted on the busy highway connecting Beletweyne and Mataban with the intent to focus on vacationers.

Al-Shabab confirmed the assault and claimed to have killed 20 domestically mobilized militia members.

The Somali authorities has condemned the “barbaric” assault and reiterated its help for native mobilization in opposition to the extremist group that holds vital elements of central and southern Somalia.
