Ford India workers protest sit-ins into day 4. Employees seek better severance packages

Ford India Pvt Ltd workers continued to protest the decision to close its Maraimalainagar facility near here.

Ford India Pvt Ltd workers continued their sit-in protest for a better severance deal. The company had decided to close its Maraimalainagar, near here, plant, according to a union official. “Workers continue their protest both inside and outside of the factory. The union official spoke on IANS’s behalf, preferring anonymity. He said that about 750 workers had arrived at the factory for Monday’s shift. Around 1,200 workers are outside.

He stated that a labor department official visited the plant on Thursday, and that three-way talks were ongoing at the plant.

Officials said that Ford India management was not expected to offer a better package of compensation on Wednesday.

Workers have been protesting Ford India’s plant since Monday.

Tuesday saw a representative from the state labor division visit the factory to hold discussions.

“This will be the last job for most workers. As our age is not favorable, we may be able to work as contract labor. A senior worker at Ford’s said that office staff could find work elsewhere, or in Ford’s other ventures.” IANS was informed Tuesday by a senior worker.

He said that Ford India is not willing to pay a generous severance package to other major players, as this could be the benchmark rate for others.

The worker explained that Ford India’s parent Ford Motor Company will pay workers a small amount due to the dollar-rupee value.

He said that food was being provided by the canteen and that the workers were safe.

IANS was told by a worker union official that production at Maraimalainagar’s car plant was only scheduled for ten days.

The plant currently produces EcoSport for export.

Ford India announced in September 2021 that it would cease vehicle assembly in Gujarat’s Sanand in the fourth quarter of 2021 and vehicle and engine production in Chennai in the second quarter of 2022.

Ford India has four plants: vehicle and engine plants in Chennai, Sanand, and Sanand.

Maraimalainagar workers are also disappointed at being left out. Tata Motors’ subsidiary Tata Passenger Electric Mobility will take over the Gujarat plant of Ford India and its workers.
